Boss on manslaughter charge after quarry death

he boss of a construction company has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a dumper truck driver.

Mark Anthony Wilkin died in Salt Lane, Cliffe, on December 5, 2007, after his truck plunged into a lake. Our picture shows the emergency services operation at the scene.

Mr Wilkin, of Longfield Road, Meopham, was 45.

Officers from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched an investigation and Edward Day who owns E J Construction Ltd, was charged with manslaughter on June 8, 2009.

Day, 53, of Longfield Road, Longfield, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday, July 13, for a preliminary hearing.

His case was adjourned until Monday, September 14.

Day has also been charged by the HSE with two associated health and safety offences.
