Celebrate the royal wedding in Kent

As Prince William marries Kate Middleton on Friday, April 29, celebrations will take place all over Kent. Chris Price outlines where to raise a glass to the new royal couple.

Eastwell Manor, near Ashford

An all-day street party at The Pavilion kicks off with a full English breakfast and a glass of Bucks Fizz from 9am to noon. From 11am, there will be live coverage of the royal wedding on a large TV and then from 2pm to 6pm, a traditional street tea party will celebrate the nuptuals. The day will be rounded off with the cutting of the Royal wedding cake finale. Children will be entertained throughout the day with magic, circus skills and balloon modelling. There will also be giant jenga, chess, Connect 4, tennis, croquet and boules to break up watching the event. Cost £45, children £20, under threes free. Call 01233 213000.

Showcase cinema, Bluewater

There is help for anyone who wants to get the big picture on the action but does not fancy the hustle and bustle of London or a street party. From 10.30am, Bluewater cinema will give viewers the best seat in the house as HRH Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton are married at Westminster Abbey. Afterwards, a cream tea will be served for £3.95. Admission to the screening is free. Details at www.showcasecinemas.co.uk.

Dickens World, Chatham

(On Saturday, April 30)

If the weather means those planned street parties are a washout, a street party with a difference in Chatham may save the day. The Dickens World Indoor Street Party will have live music from the Vintage Corporation and a hog roast. After singing patriotic songs, revellers can take a look at the wedding dress exhibition and enjoy a disco in the Porters Bar. Tickets £15. Call 01634 890421.

Dover’s big screen

In the town that has defended the kingdom from continental attacks for hundreds of years, Dover’s big screen in the Market Square will show the royal couple’s big day. Take a seat next to the fountain on the benches or just park yourself on the pavement and watch the ceremony unfold.

Hever Castle, near Edenbridge

Watching Kate Middleton become a princess at the childhood home of Tudor queen Anne Boleyn might sound like a bad omen but the castle will be alive with patriotic fervour on Friday, April 29. Screens in the Guthrie Pavilion and Moat restaurant will broadcast the royal wedding in a setting as royal as they come. Admission £14, seniors £12, children £8, families £36. Call 01732 861701.

Gravesend

(On Thursday, April 28)

Gravesend will see the largest royal wedding street party in Kent march through its streets. Some 450 school pupils will parade through the town before the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Leaving Towncentric at the St George’s shopping centre at 10am, it will then go up Windmill Street and finish at the new civic square in front of the civic centre. A free lunchtime concert will feature the Stan Lee King Roadshow and top Queen tribute performer Gary Goodmaze. Admission free. Details on 01474 369329.

Leeds Castle

A home to six medieval queens during its 900-year history, Leeds Castle is certainly one of Kent’s most appropriate settings for a Royal Wedding Celebration. Also a preferred residence for Henry VIII, the castle is an historic place to remember an historic day. The wedding will be broadcast live on a big open- air screen, with gates to the castle opening early at 9.30am. Celebrations will carry on into the evening with an open-air film screening of the musical comedy Mamma Mia! There will then be fireworks. LA Fitness, Maidstone

A right royal celebration will take place inside a marquee showing the royal wedding live on a large screen. There will be a royal banquet and licenced bar, while children will be kept entertained with a magician, face painting, cake decorating and fancy dress prizes for the best-dressed prince and princess. There will also be a table tennis tournament, tombola, raffle and karaoke. Runs 10am to 4pm. LA Fitness is in St Peter’s Street. Admission £4, in advance £3, children £1.50, in advance £1. Marine Terrace, Margate

With various indoor and outdoor showings of the wedding around the terrace, this is the street party to end all street parties in Thanet. Running from 11am to midnight, the will be stands and a tombola at this community day. The gardens will host bouncy castles, skittles and face painting and children’s entertainer Milo will be in a marquee. A fish and chips supper will be available throughout and live music will start at 5pm. Details on 07958 636343.

The Secret Gardens of Sandwich

(On Saturday, April 30)

A dusk tour of the Secret Gardens of Sandwich will precede a royal wedding celebratory dinner in the Regency Room of the Bell Hotel in Sandwich, a short walk away on The Quay. Admission £50. Call 01304 613388.

Get to London early

Hundreds of people from the county will be flocking to the capital to catch a glimpse of the royal wedding, the only advice being offered is to get there early – come rain or shine.

The ceremony at Westminster Abbey begins at 11am. Kate will travel by car at 10.51am, starting at the Goring Hotel, near Victoria Station, then travelling along the Mall, Horse Guards Parade, Whitehall and Parliament Square.

At 12.15pm, the newlyweds, along with members of the royal family will travel in a procession of horse-drawn carriages along the same route to a reception at Buckingham Palace. Big screens relaying the event will be set up in Hyde Park and Trafalgar Square.

At 1.25pm, the royal party will appear on the balcony at the palace.

At 1.30pm there will be a flypast by the Royal Air Force and a Battle of Britain memorial flight.
