Asda and Morrisons offer emergency workers, NHS and care staff with a Blue Light Card a Christmas shopping discount

Emergency workers are being offered money off their Christmas shopping by two major UK supermarkets.

Asda and Morrisons are giving NHS workers, care staff and the armed forces with a Blue Light Card a 10% discount until January.

Asda says its offer is available in all of its 633 stores across the UK and includes food and drink, clothing, homeware, toys and gifts.

In Morrisons, card holders can claim their discount at all 498 stores - alongside making use of a dedicated shopping hour that takes place Monday to Saturday from 6am until 7am.

Both retailers simply require that holders show their Blue Light ID card at the tills.

The Blue Light Card is a nationally recognised scheme which provides workers in the NHS, emergency services, social care sector and the armed forces with a range of discounts each year connected to holidays, days out and insurance.

Morrisons and Asda have chosen a Christmas discount for emergency workers to recognise and thank staff for their ongoing efforts in keeping communities safe.

Derek Lawlor, Chief Merchandising Officer at Asda, said: “Blue Light Card holders work in difficult and dangerous situations every day of the year to provide support to people across the UK who need it the most. We wanted to recognise this and thank them for everything they do by offering a discount in our stores this Christmas.”

Morrisons Chief Executive David Potts added: “Our emergency services, social care sector and armed forces have worked tirelessly this year to provide support to the many people who need it across the UK, often in exceptionally difficult circumstances. This discount is a thank you for all that they have done and continue to do for us all.”

Tom Dalby, CEO at Blue Light Card, has welcomed the offer from both supermarkets. He said that it is often the 'norm' at Christmas for its members to work very long hours and he hopes discounts on Christmas food and shopping bills will make a difference.

He added: "After last year’s restrictions, this Christmas will feel particularly special for those who were unable to see their loved ones during the festive period in 2020."

Both supermarket offers are valid until January 2.
