A level two cold weather alert is in place across most of the country. The Met Office's alert system – which can go as high as Level Four, where a national emergency is called – is put in place where there is a 60% or higher chance of severe cold weather, icy conditions or heavy snow.

The alert is expected to be in place until at least 6pm tomorrow.

There is expected to be widespread frosts and freezing fog patches today and possibly on Tuesday.

Gritters will be out in force tonight as surface temperatures drop below freezing with motorists urged to plan their commutes tomorrow morning.

KCC are advising to keep indoor temperatures between 18 and 21C (65-75F), have regular hot drinks and meals and wrap up with several thin layers.

They have also extended advice to prepare yourself with flu vaccinations and order repeat prescriptions in good time to make sure you have enough supplies.
