FIRE crews had to tackle two cornfield fires in the county over the weekend.

Crews from Maidstone were called to a blaze that broke out in a field in Back Street, between Leeds and Langley, near Maidstone, at around 2.30pm on Sunday.

It is believed around two hectares of the crop were affected.

Earlier, firefighters battled a fire in a cornfield at Chart Sutton on Saturday.

Four pumps attended the blaze in a field off Warmlake Road which started at around 5.45pm.

Crews estimated that about four hectares of standing corn were severely damaged in the fire, which took just under an hour to bring under control.

Tim Cowen, who lives nearby, spotted the fire and helped direct the fire crews to the field's entrance.

He said: "It looked quite bad from what I could see, I would say the farmer has lost a good few acres, although it was lucky the fire brigade got there quickly otherwise it could have been much worse."
