Danny Kedwell believes the arrival of experienced striker Deon Burton has made him a better player.

The summer arrival of Burton looked like threatening Kedwell’s position in the team but instead the pair have formed a deadly combination that has helped guide Martin Allen’s side to the top of League 2.

For Kedwell, the goals have flowed with Tuesday’s winner against Southend being his eighth goal in nine appearances this season. It was his fourth successful penalty conversion from four attempts already.

It has meant the 29-year-old has been hogging the headlines but he praised former £1million striker Burton for his input.

Kedwell (pictured) said: "He is helping me massively. He has played at the higher level, he is a great lad and gets me going as well. The things he says to me gets me on my toes.

"We get on well and it shows that we are making a good partnership. We are in it together so it doesn’t matter who scores if we win."

Kedwell’s winner on Tuesday came from the spot and he revealed after the match that there is little science behind his impressive success-rate from 12 yards.

He said: "I just think I have to smash it because the more times you place it, the more you miss."
