Maidstone-born Spiller (pictured) made 187 appearances for the Gills but next season begins a new chapter as he guns for promotion with Blue Square Bet Premier side Luton Town.

Spiller said: “I was disappointed to leave a club that was a big part of my life.

“The Gillingham fans have regularly sent me messages, which I am really grateful for. I look forward to seeing them at Priestfield again but I hope they get the promotion that they deserve next season.”

The popular midfielder had been hoping for a milestone 10th season with the Gills.

“It was a big disappointment to leave with the milestone year approaching but the chairman thought it was the right decision for me to move on and so I respect that,” he said.

“I will just go and get my head down and work hard for another club, like I always have done, and work to the best of my ability.”

And it may not be the last the Gills fans see of Spiller has he eyes a management role one day.

“I would like to definitely be in a manager’s role at some point,” he said.

“I am getting to the age where I can take control of the dressing room I think I could look after a club.”
