Deanna inspires Kent girls to victory

A SCINTILLATING all-round display by Deanna Cooper steered Kent U11s to a 36-run victory over Surrey.

The 11-year old from Teynham hammered 27 runs, including several fours to the square leg boundary, in Kent’s total of 127 for 3 after 25 overs. She rounded off her stylish innings at Tunbridge Wells Borderers with a sweetly-timed off-drive for four before she was retired.

She and Grace Lovegrove, who captained the side in the absence of Leybourne’s Georgina Webb, put on 99 for the second wicket after the early loss of Zoe Broster, from Harrietsham.

Grace retired on 27, leaving Emma Perry, from Lords Wood, Chatham, who made eight, and Deveena Pithia, from Blean, near Canterbury, 13 not out, to take the score to 127.

Deanna then showed her talent with the ball by taking three wickets - all bowled - in her first over. She narrowly missed a hat-trick after dismissing Elizabeth Donkin and Louisa Rubio with her second and third balls, before hitting the stumps with her sixth ball to get rid of Heather Jones, leaving Surrey reeling at 1 - 3. She ended her spell with match figures of three for 14.

To cap a remarkable performance that underlines her huge potential, she ran out Surrey’s Laura Jarvis with a direct hit from point.

Grace Lovegrove, Emma Perry, Jade Quinton, from Sevenoaks, Riti Patel, from Grove Green, Maidstone, and Claudia O’Connell, from Hollingbourne, all bowled tightly, taking one wicket apiece.

In another outstanding piece of fielding, Emma ran out Kirsten Amey with a direct throw from short fine leg.

It was an outstanding team performance by the SeaFrance-backed team, giving the Kent girls their sixth win from seven matches.

David Sear, Kent’s cricket development officer, said: “In spite of Deanna's obvious outstanding individual performance, it was a superbly spirited all round team effort, led splendidly by vice captain Grace Lovegrove.”

The U11s’ final county match of the season, due to have been played against Sussex in Tunbridge Wells on Sunday, has been called off by the visitors.
