A young man who died after falling from the top floor of a Kent multi-storey car park had been suffering mood swings in the weeks leading up to his death, a court heard.

John Day, 20, of Grange Road, Gravesend, had had a row with girlfriend Amber Holman on the day of the incident, May 6 this year.

He had gone back to his parents house where he lived and his mother Barbara Phillips said in her statement to Dartford Coroner's court: "He was clearly in a bad mood."

After seeing him talking aggressively to someone on the phone, she asked him what had happened - but he accused her of interfering with his relationship. "He was in a real temper," she added.

His mum decided to leave the house with Mr Day's sister Zoe to let him calm down. She received a text from him shortly after and went straight home, but found he had gone.

Horrified witnesses dialled 999 after seeing Mr Day fall from the Thamesgate Shopping Centre car park in Gravesend. Police and ambulance crews arrived at the scene but he was confirmed dead at Darent Valley hospital.

Coroner Alan Blunsden said: "Despite CCTV footage showing John in the car park on his own there was not enough evidence to say whether he had taken his own life."

He recorded an open verdict.
