Thousands of extra cars will take to Kent's roads today as last-minute shoppers join Christmas getaway traffic.

The Highways Agency said the county's motorways and A-roads will be free of roadworks in a bid to ease congestion.

However, delays are expected on the M25 around the Dartford Crossing.

Queues are also likely on the A2 near Dartford as shoppers head to Bluewater in search of last-minute Christmas presents.

Meanwhile, Southeastern said there will be an early shutdown of services tonight - with last trains to Kent leaving central London stations at around 8pm.

Mainline services in Kent will be operating a weekend timetable from today until New Year's Day, with some extra trains during peak times.
