Fire plunges parts of Medway into darkness

Homes were left without power for more than 24 hours after an electricity junction box caught alight.

Firefighters were called to the scene in Delce Road, Rochester at around 11.10pm on Friday night.

A spokesman said: “Due to the electrical nature of the fire we couldn’t put water on it, we just had to let it burn out and ensure the fire did not spread which would have been the greatest concern for residents.”

The fire left 125 homes without power but supplies were quickly restored to the majority of customers.

However, 30 homes were still left cut off while EDF engineers attempted to fix the problem.

These homes were not reconnected until 1am on Sunday morning.

A spokesman for EDF Energy Newtworks said: “Customers were off supply in Delce Road, Rochester following a linkbox fault.

“When the fault first took place, 125 customers were affected.

“The final 30 customers went back on supply at 1am on Sunday.

“EDF Energy Networks would like to apologise to all those customers who were left without power.”

In a separate incident, one of Medway largest supermarket’s was left without power on Saturday morning.

Asda in Maidstone Road, Chatham, was affected by a power cut, along with more than 800 homes. It is thought the break in supplies also affected traffic lights on the Bridgewood roadabout in Chatham.

A spokesman for EDF said: “A total of 818 customers were briefly off supply in and around ME5 9SE at 8.18am on Saturday. Everyone was restored shortly after customers first lost supply.”
