A DISUSED community centre was left looking like a bomb site after another arson attack.

Medway Council said it was going to demolish the building in Albatross Avenue, Strood, after it was set alight at the end of June. But it looks as if the arsonists have saved them a job after Wednesday night's fire.

Twelve appliances from Strood, Medway and Thames-side were called to the former Earl Estate club at 9.45pm.

Firefighters tried to tackle the blaze from inside the building but they were pulled back due to the site being unstable. Instead crews tried to dampen the fire by using hoses and a height vehicle outside the building.

It took almost five hours before the crews could stand down.

Ian Simpson, red watch manager for Strood fire station, said: "They had broken into the boarded-up building. Now it looks like a Second World War bomb site."

A council spokesman said: "Council officers visited the area on Thursday morning to inspect the building. The site has been secured and temporary fencing put up."

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating a suspicious fire in Albatross Avenue."
