A block of flats had to be evacuated in the early hours of this morning after a camping stove gas cylinder caught light.

The three-storey building, Jubilee Court, in Spring Vale South, Dartford, was evacuated at about 12.10am this morning.

Two pumps were there for about an hour.

It is believed an LPG gas cyclinder, being used for cooking inside one of the flats, was the cause of the fire.

One man suffered slight burns to his hand removing the cylinder from the building with a woman who lived in one of the flats.

He was given first aid by firefighters at the scene. There were no other injuries.

Crews carried out search and rescue while the other flats were vented for any smoke.

There was slight fire damage in the ground floor flat and in the property's hall.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "We would discourage members of the public from using camping equipment, particularly gas-powered camping equipment, indoors and would also like to ask that smoke detectors are checked regularly."

Fire crews were at the scene for about an hour after checking the building was secure and allowing residents to return.
