Flood alerts issued across Kent after heavy rainfall

Several flood alerts have been issued across Kent.

River levels are rising after heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours and flooding is expected to impact low-lying land, roads and paths.

An alert has been put in place for the Upper River Medway covering parts of the Weald from Forest Row to Penshurst, including Ashurst, as well as for the River Bourne, encompassing Hadlow to East Peckham.

Another warning has been put in place for the Rivers Eden and Eden Brook with streams along the Kent Ditch from Blindley Heath to Penshurst, including Edenbridge and Hever likely to be affected.

The Upper River Stour has also been made subject to a flood warning with communities on the Great Stour from Charing Heath to the A2070 including Ashford, at risk, as well as those communities on the East Stour, including the Whitewater and Ruckinge Dykes and the Aylesford Stream.

The River Darent is also expected to remain high throughout the day.

Again, parts limely to be affected stretch from Westerham to Dartford, including Brasted, Sundridge, Chipstead, Dunton Green, Otford, Eynsford and South Darenth.

The Environment Agency warns flooding is possible in all the above areas although property is not expected to be affected.

It advises motorists to plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded and to avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.

The Met Office has put a yellow weather warning in place which covers the whole of Kent. It’s been extended to last until midday today (February 18).

It says rain may cause some travel disruption and flooding this morning and bus and train services wil probably be affected with journey times taking longer.

Some interruption to power supplies and other services is likely, it adds.
