Inverness Caledonian Thistle have taken former Gillingham central defender Simon King on trial.

The Scottish Premier League side, bossed by Terry Butcher, took a look at King during the side’s match against Elgin City on Saturday.

King (pictured), released in the summer by the Gills, played the full 90 minutes of the friendly match.

His last three years at Gillingham were blighted by an ankle injury that restricted him to just a handful of matches.

He missed the whole of the 2009/10 season through injury, having helped the Gills to promotion in the heart of the defence alongside Garry Richards, taking the player-of-the-year award.

An injury in pre-season damaged an already fragile ankle and left him sidelined.

King returned a season later, by which time the club had dropped back into League 2 and were under the management of Andy Hessenthaler.

Four appearances in the 2010/11 season was followed by a loan move to Plymouth in the early part of last season.

He made nine more Gills appearances during the 2011/12 season but was not offered a new contract. He left the Gills with 112 appearances to his name.

Curtis Weston, who was also released by the Gills at the end of last season, played 45 minutes for Barnet on Saturday in a friendly match.
