Kent Greyhound Rescue, in Hythe, came up with the idea after a new bunch of hounds arrived at their centre and amongst them was Nessa.

A spokesman for the centre, which has its kennels in Headcorn, said: "When Nessa arrived some of the other dogs did not have very nice names so we decided to go with the Gavin and Stacey theme.

"Nessa was our first and she found a home very quickly.

"Some people choose to keep the name but others change them which is fine as they do not know their names by that point."

The trend took off and the charity named 13 other greyhounds after the sitcom's character's including Uncle Bryn, Pam and Mick and Deano.

"The Gavin and Stacey theme did seem to work well and we did get lots of feedback saying how good it was," the spokesman added.

"As long as people smile that is what counts. These dogs have not had much of a start in life so all the attention they get really helps."

The sitcom written by Ruth Jones and James Corden is about two families in Barry, Wales, and Billericay, Essex. It follows titular characters' romance as well as the lives of their crazy family and friends but are the greyhounds anything like their namesakes?

Pam is said to have been a total love bug who loved to give kisses and found her new home at the second attempt, although it was not her fault the first one did not work out.

But partner Mick is still waiting despite being a fan favourite. The two-year-old became popular amongst staff when he could not work out how to go through the hatch at the kennels to get outside.

He is currently living in a foster home and much like his character played by Larry Lamb is extremely laid back.

Smithy was a handsome, light brindle boy and happy chap, who also got chosen very quickly. Although his new owner was not so smitten with his name so he now goes by Cribbens.

Similarly, Doris – who is now known as Delta – was quickly re-homed due to her big personality to match her size.

Brin – incorrectly spelt by the rescue centre – was in a poor condition when he arrived with baldy thighs and was underweight however he had a very gentle greyhound soul and soon found his home.

Apparently he is doing really well and his name is now correctly spelt Bryn.

Gwen was also reserved last week and Dave (coaches), Neil (the Baby), Stacey, Emlyn and Owain are also with their new owners.

You would be forgiven for not immediately recognising the names of the last two.

Emlyn, played by Youssef Kerkour, appeared in the 2019 Christmas special as a neighbour who Nessa and Neil the Baby sings carols to.

Owain, played by Steven Meo, is one of Gavin's colleagues when he moves to Wales. You may remember the joke better as "Owain Hughes and before you ask no I don't".

Despite being the leading man, Gavin is still looking for his forever home as is three-year-old, "goof ball" Deano.
