Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler has urged his team to show their new-found confidence this weekend.

The Gills put memories of the 5-4 defeat at Bury behind them to keep a clean sheet and beat Shrewsbury 2-0 at Priestfield last weekend.

Now Hessenthaler wants his team to build on their first win when they visit Bradford on Saturday.

"There’s no point going and not performing and coming away with nothing," said Hessenthaler.

"We’ve got to get a consistent run of results and we’ll be full of confidence after the weekend.

"We got three points and hopefully that can kick-start our season."

Along with Gillingham, Bradford – managed by former Gills boss Peter Taylor – were touted as potential League 2 champions before the start of the campaign.

But they have also suffered from a slow start – with just one win to their name – and Hessenthaler admitted it would be a big match for both teams.

He added: "It’s two fancied teams that have both had a slow start. It’s not a major problem as there are a lot of games to play."

Taylor and Hessenthaler remain close friends but the Gills boss admitted that any friendship will be put on hold from kick-off.

"We speak quite a lot but come Saturday at 3pm, we’ll be enemies for 90 minutes," he said.

Hessenthaler is waiting for a check on defender Tony Sinclair’s back problem but is hopeful of naming an unchanged team, with Cody McDonald partnering Adebayo Akinfenwa up front.
