Martin Allen shuffled his team once more on Saturday and was delighted to have again come away with maximum points.

The 2-0 win at Port Vale on Saturday was Gillingham’s seventh from eight games in League 2.

Gills boss Allen (pictured) said: "It’s been a great start and we made five or six changes to our team that played on Tuesday night (against Southend). We have a very strong squad and we have faith in the whole squad, and it was a great performance."

Gillingham were without Charlie Lee, Jack Payne and Myles Weston because of injuries and were also missing Bradley Dack through suspension. And with new signing Robbie Findley in the starting line-up it was once again a new-look starting XI for Allen.

The Gills boss said: "When we got together in pre-season we all trained together. I said to them that if they all trained hard and they worked together then they would all play.

"We had five or six different players playing but that’s not being brave because they can alternate and they’ve played in games and won games so why not play them?

"We just go on to the next game now. We play Rochdale next week. A few of the older players have worked tirelessly and some of them need resting."

Reflecting on the success at Vale Park on Saturday, Allen added: "Port Vale had a great start to the season, too, but we took our goals very well and deserved the victory.

"We could have won by more but we got two early goals and that gave us the momentum for the rest of the match. It was a good header from Deon and then Chris had picked out the corner with an excellent strike."
