Gillingham midfielder Danny Jackman was pleased to be among the scorers in their win over Hereford United

Danny Jackman believes Gillingham’s team spirit was the key factor behind their impressive return to form.

The Gills had taken just one point from four games before they thrashed Hereford 6-1 in League 2 on Saturday.

Jackman, who scored Gillingham’s fourth goal, felt that there had been an over-reaction to the recent drop in form.

"It was nice to get back to winning ways," he said. "People tend to think if you have a couple of blips then it’s all doom and gloom.

"But we’ve kept together, we have a good squad and games like this show that we can bounce back.

"We’ve got good quality, so if we have that belief in our ability then the results will sort themselves out.

"It will give us a massive confidence boost. Six goals in any game, whether you are playing a team at the top or the bottom, is a massive boost for us all.

"It emphasises that we are a good team, a good squad, and a couple of results here and there do not make a whole season.

"When we had a bad result and performance, for some reason our confidence took a hit and it snowballed a little bit. That can be a dangerous thing. The same way winning can become a habit, losing or bad performances can become a habit too.

"So we’ve put that to bed and if you can’t get confidence out of that result and performance then you are struggling."

Jackman nearly missed the Hereford game after stomach cramps prevented him from training the day before.

But he was back to his best in the midfield alongside a rejuvenated Charlie Lee and even capped his performance with a stunning right-foot goal.

"It was nice to score as I don’t get that many," he said. "It was more of a shock that it was my right foot as well!

"Hopefully, I can follow it up with a few more this season."
