Debutant Wahab Riaz played a key role as Kent claimed their first Friends Life t20 victory of the season on Saturday.

Spitfires, who saw their trip to Somerset on Friday washed out by rain, won by six wickets at Glamorgan with Pakistan international Riaz taking 1-26 before scoring 32 not out in just 15 balls.

Riaz shared an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 66 in 26 balls with Sam Northeast (pictured), who made 33 not out from 20 balls.

Kent appeared to be out of the game when Darren Stevens (27) went in the 15th over to leave them 89-4, chasing Glamorgan’s 154-5.

But Riaz was promoted up the order and it was a decision that paid off as he hit sixes off Robert Croft and Will Owen.

After losing the toss, Glamorgan got off to a decent start with openers Mark Cosgrove (47) and Alviro Petersen (65) scoring 56 in the first six overs.

Rookie Adam Ball took the wicket of Cosgrove but it was not until Glamorgan pushed for big runs late on that the wickets started to fall with Charl Langeveldt and Riaz taking one apiece as they finished on 154-5.

Kent’s reply did not start at the same pace, with Joe Denly (24) and Rob Key (19) both falling to leave Spitfires 45-2 in the ninth over.

Azhar Mahmood (15) tried to inject some momentum, as did Stevens who hit two sixes but his dismissal appeared to signal the end of Kent’s hopes only for Northeast and Riaz to guide their team home.
