Being one of the biggest names in golf doesn’t guarantee universal recognition, as school children proved.

A team of young golfers from St Peter’s School in Sittingbourne came face-to-face with Colin Montgomerie after taking part in a competition - but only a few of them recognised the 2010 Ryder Cup captain.

Year 5 teacher and the school’s PE co-ordinator Stephen Tierney said: "They knew he was a celebrity and he signed all their t-shirts and hats. He was very good with them.

"About half of them were saying ‘who is he?’ which was quite funny. As a golf fan, I knew him, of course."

The nine- and 10-year-olds were at London Golf Course near Brands Hatch where they won the Tri-golf contest.

Armed with over-sized plastic chippers and putters, they scored points in a series of challenges, such as chipping a ball at a target.

"They won by 2,000 points," said Mr Tierney. "Some of them have lovely little swings so we might have some stars of the future, you never know."
