Great Lines Heritage Park should be open by 2011

Five contractors are being appointed to transform the Great Lines into a heritage park.

The go ahead for the £2.1 million scheme was given by Medway Council’s Cabinet on Tuesday.

The area between the hospital, Brompton Barracks and Fort Amherst is part of a bid to gain World Heritage Status for Medway’s military remains around the Historic Dockyard.

The work will involve the laying of footpaths, architectural lighting, the construction of bridges over the defensive ditches which will be excavated between the Fort Anherst and the Lower Lines.

The government backed project has English Heritage’s active involvement.

The scheme - called the Great Lines Heritage Park - should be completed within the next two years.
