Gritter lorries due on Kent roads as red alert issued on Thursday and Friday

Gritter lorries are set to head out onto the county's roads later this week as temperatures are forecast to plummet.

Lows of 1C and -1C are predicted on Thursday and Friday respectively, prompting the gritting team at Kent County Council to issue red warnings on both days.

The alert is issued when temperatures are expected to fall below freezing when ice, snow, hoar frost or freezing rain is deemed likely.

Gritters will be treating primary routes in the county from 3.30am tomorrow as road surface temperatures fall close to zero.

There is a risk of hoar frost.

While today a green code is in place, Saturday has an amber warning as temperatures are expected to fall to 0C.

This is issued when road surface temperatures are predicted to be close to zero, below zero but with dry conditions or when there is uncertainty about the forecast.
