Helen's a big hit with church congregation

WORSHIPPERS at a Kent church were entertained at the weekend by 1960s pop icon Helen Shapiro. The singer was at St Michael and All Angels Church at Marden, near maidstone, to talk about her belief in God and to sing a few of her old hits.

Event organiser Diane Copas, of Haffenden Close, Marden, said: "She just held everyone's attention for an hour and a half. And, of course, she started with Walking Back To Happiness because everyone knows that song."

Mrs Copas decided to organise the event after Helen Shapiro sang at the Baptist Church in Maidstone, two years ago. She finally managed to book the singer in May.

About 350 people packed into the church, in Church Green, to hear the singer perform a selection of her hits, including her first song, Don't Treat Me Like A Child, from 1961.

After the performance, the singer spent more than an hour chatting to villagers and guests about their faith.
