Police believe human bones found in undergrowth just yards
from railway tracks in Herne Bay are those of a man missing
for eight years.

The gruesome discovery was made on Monday afternoon by
a Network Rail worker clearing the sidings near Blacksole Bridge in
Margate Road.

Detectives now think the remains are of a 58-year-old man who
disappeared from his home in 2004.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "This follows
enquiries made at the scene and checks on details of missing people
from the local area.

“Investigators are speaking with the man’s family and are working
to formally identify the man.

“The coroner has been notified and officers will prepare a file for
the inquest in due course. A post mortem, held on Tuesday, May
1, was not able to shed any initial light on the possible cause of
death.”

Police swarmed the site shortly after 4pm and set up a crime
scene by the side of the tracks.

A Home Office pathologist and forensic anthropologist have been
called in to help identify the individual.

Mum-of-two Tracy Manklow - who has lived in a house backing onto
the tracks for 15 years – spoke of her shock after learning of the
gruesome discovery.

She said: "We came back from the school run at about 3.15pm and
everything was normal.

"We had tea and went back out and I was like 'oh my god'. It
looked like the entire Herne Bay police force was out there. There
were cars everywhere.

"An officer came round and said they'd found some human bones. I
couldn't believe it.

"It's strange finding something like that so close to here and
scary to think they may have been down there for so long.

"I've cut back the bushes before, but I'm just glad I never went
exploring.

"I hope if it's a missing person somebody, somewhere knows who
they are and can finally get some closure.

"But it sounds like they may need dental records to work out who
it is."
