Immigration not key decider in Kent's general election, according to exclusive Facts International poll

Immigration will not be a deciding factor for Kent voters at the General Election, according to the only county-wide poll carried out ahead of May 7.

KentOnline has teamed up with Ashford-based market research company Facts International to conduct an exclusive survey of 1,000 residents eligible to vote.

The results reveal that, despite the publicity surrounding Ukip leader Nigel Farage's candidacy in South Thanet, immigration is only the third most important factor.

The findings also show that a third of Ukip voters think David Cameron would make a better Prime Minster than Nigel Farage and that, with just weeks to go, many people remain undecided about who to vote for.

The survey also gauges the mood of the county on topics such as expansion of grammar schools, the state of the NHS, the economy and future housing needs.

All the results will be published on our new election website kentdecides.co.uk which went live today.

KM Group editorial director Ian Carter said: "This is set to be one of the closest-fought General Elections in the county for generations.

"Whilst Kent has traditionally been True Blue, the Ukip factor has changed the dynamics completely.

"However, there are other key issues for the county such as our rail infrastructure, crime rates and education. This is certainly the largest survey we have every been involved in, and the results should be fascinating.

"It's important the results are credible, and we are delighted to be working with Facts International. They have built up a fantastic reputation over the last 30 years."

Facts International’s CEO, Crispin Beale commented “Facts International is delighted to partner with the KM Group to uncover the issues that matter to the voters of Kent.

"Not only is Kent a key county of national interest in this supposedly 'toughest to call' election, but the results of this poll will hopefully allow Kent’s representatives to reflect their constituents' views when they take their seats in parliament”.
