For the first time this season, our fans probably went away from The Valley a bit disappointed on Saturday.

But I don’t think anyone should be too frustrated that we could only draw against Southampton, especially after six wins in a row.

They may be bottom of the league, but I think everyone knows that it’s a false position and they are a much better side than that. In fact, they’re probably the best side we’ve played this season.

Just as we have done already this season, against Leyton Orient and Brentford in particular, we had to battle to get our rewards.

We have played some great football at times – I don’t think many sides in League One are going to score goals like our second against Brentford – but the manager is constantly reminding us that we have to win the physical battles first.

That was the case on Saturday and perhaps we didn’t really get to grips with Southampton in the first half, although we were by no means overwhelmed.

We spoke about a few things at half-time and were much better in the second half, and probably deserved to win the match.

I have no idea if my effort was offside or not, but Deon Burton’s header wasn’t going in so I couldn’t leave it. It must have been close, as was Deon’s disallowed goal.

I signed a new contract at the club at the start of the month, and I’m pleased the transfer window has now closed because it means I can get on with my football.

There has been plenty of speculation about my future. Players always say they don’t pay any attention to rumours and that they don’t read the newspapers, but I’m not sure how true that is. I did see a lot of the stories, but I’ve never wanted to leave Charlton.

I’ve shown that by signing an extension to my current contract and it was all sorted very quickly. Now I can get my head down and just play football.

If I had left Charlton, I probably would have been playing reserve team football, and I really don’t want that.

I speak to John Bostock at Tottenham Hotspur a lot, and he’s only really playing U18 football. He’s happy, but I think he would be a lot happier if he had stayed at Crystal Palace because I’m sure he would be playing in the first XI week in, week out.

Norwich City are up next for us – a second match in a row against one of the sides relegated from League 1 alongside us last season.

They have not started very well but we know there is plenty of quality in their side.

We know it will be a tough game, and we will have to win another battle if we are to maintain our 100 per cent away record in the league this season.
