James Tredwell has been left out of the England squads for the forthcoming Twenty20 and one-day internationals against Sri Lanka.

The 29-year-old Kent off-spinner was a member of the World Cup squad earlier this year, and was in the Performance Squad named earlier this summer.

But he has been overlooked as understudy to Graeme Swann in favour of Nottinghamshire’s Samit Patel who earns a recall after being left out because of fitness issues.

Tredwell was a member of the side who lost by 10 wickets in the World Cup quarter-finals against Sri Lanka in Chennai in March.

A week earlier he bowled England to an unlikely 18-run win against the West Indies, finishing with career-best ODI figures of 4-48.

Former one-day captain Paul Collingwood, wicketkeeper Matt Prior and Sussex’s Michael Yardy are the other notable absentees from the two squads.
