Jobs fears as engineering firm closes

UP TO 70 workers at the Oare-based engineering firm of Thomas Seagar Ltd face a bleak Christmas after the administrators were called in.

The announcement was made at the weekend and the firm has been closed until further notice. It is hoped a buyer can be found.

The union Amicus AEEU, which represents the workers, said it would be contacting the Trade & Industry Secretary, through the administrators, to force payment of back salary, holiday pay and redundancy money.

Union regional officer Barry Chapple said workers had been told the company could not afford to pay holiday money or for the last week's work.

Mr Chapple said had received "an inkling" that things might not be healthy after receiving a call from the pension providers a week ago. Workers had told Mr Chapple when he went to the firm that they were aware the company was in difficulties. But the news has shocked many in the town so close to Christmas.

Town Mayor Cllr Tom Gates said: "It's a tragedy coming at this time of the year. It's very bad timing on the part of the company.

"I think Thomas Seagar is about the last of the heavy industry in the town. It will be a disaster for the town. I hope they can find a buyer."

If no buyer could be found he said the land should be retained for industry.

Faversham MP Hugh Robertson said it would have a terrific impact on the community and on those directly affected.

"Manufacturing industry is right in the middle of a long-term recession caused by a number of factors," he said. "I will obviously do everything possible to help all those affected."

No one from the firm was available for comment.
