Kent County Cricket Club batsman Sam Northeast writes exclusively for the KM Group

I am really glad that I have eventually signed my contract at the club. Kent is the place where I love playing my cricket and as long as the environment is right at the club I want to play here for a while to come.

There was also good news in the arrival of fast bowler Charlie Shreck who will add some experience to our young attack.

We had another good championship win last week against Essex although the pitch at Canterbury was a disgrace.

As a young batter you don’t want to be playing your home games on pitches like that. Balls on a good length were flying past your head one ball and then hitting you on the shin the next.

This year has been tough with some of the pitches we have played on - Cardiff, Lord’s and Northampton to name a few.

But this year has made me question my technique a lot and when you come up on a flat wicket you are in no confidence at all to cash in. That is what ‘Keysy’ did well at the Kia Oval last month.

That’s the experience you need to keep believing in what you’ve got and when the time comes make sure you get plenty of runs.

I hope that this difficult period I am going through at the moment will make me a better player in the future.

It has been amazing to see just what we are capable of with a fully fit and in form bowling attack.

There is no doubt that this year has been dominated by the bowlers and if we’d had this bowling attack for the whole season it would have been interesting to see where we would be in the table.

We are playing Glamorgan in next week’s final Championship game at Canterbury under lights with a pink ball. Now that will be interesting. I am actually looking forward to the prospect of it.

The real talking point at the moment is the football fantasy league being played by the Kent squad.
