Paul Farbrace says the chance to return to Kent offers him an "exciting and fantastic challenge."

The 41-year-old, who left his post as Academy Director two years ago to become assistant coach with Sri Lanka, turned down the chance of a new improved two-year contract, to replace Graham Ford as Head Coach.

He leaves his present position later this month, before starting work on September 1 in a new coaching structure which sees Simon Willis in a new role of Cricket Operations and Talent Development Manager with Phil Relf continuing as Academy Director.

Farbrace admitted: "It was a tough decision to say no to Sri Lanka. The offer of a new contract was there prior to the World Twenty20 championships but I delayed signing it for a couple of reasons.

"They improved it in all sorts of ways, not only financial, but joining Kent is an exciting and fantastic challenge.

He added: "I want the club to continue to be successful and win trophies. It’s also the chance to help develop and produce our own players in a new coaching team with Simon and Phil.

"All three of us will be involved right from the Under-11s through to the first eleven.

"I have enjoyed my time with Sri Lanka, a country very passionate about cricket, which has given me the chance to work with some of the best players in the world and some talented youngsters.

"I also have been able to see how the game is played and coached on the sub continent.

Farbrace denied the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team bus in Lahore last year played a part in his decision to return to England.

He suffered shrapnel wounds to his arm but said: "What happened hasn’t soured my memory of the country. I was one of the lucky ones that survived, others lost their lives. It was an horrendous day, but only one out of two years and I have been able to move on."
