James Tredwell is hoping his headline-grabbing performance against West Indies last week proves enough to retain his place in the side for the World Cup quarter-final against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Saturday.

The 29-year-old Kent off-spinner starred in Chennai last week, with man-of-the-match figures of 4-48 on his first appearance, after being the surprise selection – at least to anyone outside the England dressing room – for England’s 18-run win which kept them in the competition.

Speaking from the England hotel before training on Tuesday, Tredwell (pictured) said: "I don’t think I have done myself any harm, but have got no real inkling at the moment what the side will be.

"I knew the day before I was going to play against West Indies, the management had been talking to me for a couple of days before and I felt I had got a chance, seeing what the wicket had done there in the previous match."

Tredwell seized his chance after becoming almost the forgotten man of the squad.

He said: "I had been working hard in the nets and went into the West Indies game full of confidence which made it easier to perform.

"There were a few nerves because it was a must-win game and I wanted to do all the right things and get us over the line."

"Getting Chris Gayle’s wicket in my first over was a great way to start because he could have taken us apart and won the game single-handedly."
