James Tredwell said he was delighted to have helped England complete a ODI series whitewash of Australia, but faces an anxious wait to see if he will be recalled to face South Africa next month.

Kent spinner Tredwell, 30, from New Romney, was called into the side for Tuesday’s seven-wicket stroll against the tourists at Old Trafford in place of Tim Bresnan (sore elbow), having been initially brought into the squad in place of the rested Graeme Swann.

The rain-shortened victory completed a 4-0 series win and saw Tredwell take his first international wickets on home soil and complete a run-out on his way to figures of 2-23 off seven overs which paved the way for England to cruise home.

Tredwell (pictured) said: "When you’re sat on the sidelines you’re thinking about coming in and, if you get the chance, you want to do yourself justice.

"I was very pleased with my performance. I helped turned the game a little bit, and the run out was particularly pleasing."

Swann is expected to return to the side for the three-Test series with South Africa, which begins next Thursday, but Tredwell has not given up appearing in the five-game ODI series and three-match t20 series against the Proteas, beginning on August 24.

Tredwell said: "You never know. Swanny is obviously a fantastic bowler and I am going to be under him for the forseeable future, but when you get the chance you have got to show what you can do and I hope I have done that.

"I’m sure he’ll come back in for the Test series and will do well, but I have got to keep performing and show I’m ready if needed."

He added: "I’ve had no real indication of what might happen later in the summer, I’ll just have to wait and see how it goes. Swanny needed a break this time, but I have no idea if he’ll be rested again after the Test series."

Tredwell will get his chance to impress against the tourists for Kent in a three-day game at Canterbury from Friday, though they will be without influential wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Boucher who has retired after an eye injury.

Tredwell said: "Even though Boucher will be a massive loss, they have other good players.

"It’s a shame he won’t be playing because you want to play against the top players."
