Simon Willis hopes his position working with Kent’s young cricketers remains in place when the club appoint a new head coach.

Willis, the county’s high performance director, oversees the club’s youth system, Academy and second team, a position he has held since 2009 after a coaching shake-up.

Following the departure of Paul Farbrace in September, Kent expect to appoint a replacement director of cricket or head coach before Christmas and Willis (pictured) is hoping his position at the St Lawrence Ground remains.

He said: “I hope my role continues as it is because I have enjoyed the area I have been working in.

“It’s been great seeing some of the young guys coming in and we are making some subtle changes underneath that I hope will make a difference so that we can find one or two more players than we already know about.

“I see it as the start of a process and I would like to see that through because it is not an overnight thing. It’s going to take patience and we are going to learn lessons.”

Meanwhile, a mix of UK and overseas coaches are due to undergo the final interview stage as Kent continue their search for a new head coach.

Kent chief executive Jamie Clifford revealed the remaining six are not all overseas coaches and that those with less experience have as much chance as those that have coached for years.

He said: “They are not all overseas. They come from a variety of places and not all from one place overseas and not one place in the UK. It’s what we wanted, a real range of options.

“Some have decades of experience, some have a lot less.”

He added: “In an ideal world we will get it done before Christmas but I’m still determined to get the right person and if it takes a bit longer, then it takes a bit longer.”
