Last chance to register for EU referendum campaign

People are being urged to let their voice be heard in the EU referendum campaign by making sure they are eligible to vote.

Today marks the last day on which it is possible to register to vote in the historic referendum, which will shape the political direction the UK goes for decades to come.

And tomorrow is the last day to apply for a postal vote if you are away on the day the referendum is held.

People who voted in recent council and crime commissioner elections in May are already eligible and do not need to register separately for the EU Referendum.

But there is concern that many people - particularly younger voters - may miss out and a bid to persuade voters to make sure they register has been under way.

A public awareness campaign by the Electoral Commission has led to 1.4m people applying to vote and 186,000 registered last Friday.

However if you recently moved, changed your name or changed nationality since May 5 you will need to inform your local council.

In England, Scotland or Wales, you can register to vote online anytime at gov.uk/register-to-vote. The deadline is midnight tonight.

If you are a British citizen living abroad, you can register to vote online in the same way.

Meanwhile, all but one of the county’s MPs have now declared which way they will vote in the referendum.

Faversham and Mid Kent MP Helen Whatley is backing the remain campaign while Gillingham MP Rehman Chishti is supporting the leave campaign.

That means a total of 10 MPs are supporting staying in the EU while six are among those who want to leave.

Chatham and Aylesford MP Tracey Crouch remains the only one to be undecided.
