The disappearance of the Great British pub is well documented.

With alcohol cheaper to buy in supermarkets, punters more reluctant to leave their homes in these difficult economic times and with some regulars put off by the smoking ban, many are suffering.

Only weeks ago one of Medway’s best-known pubs, The North Foreland, shut up shop, although no official explanation for its closure was ever disclosed.

Now we at the Medway Messenger are calling on the people of Medway to love their local and to spend a pound or two to keep the historic and traditional pub alive in these difficult times.

Over Medway Messenger print edition has been putting the spotlight on Medway's top spots for real ale. Those featured so far include:

•The White Horse , Borstal

• The Black Lion, Gillingham

• The King's Arms, Upper Upnor

King George V , Brompton

The Cannon , Brompton

The Frog and Toad , Gillingham

The Scruffy Duck , Gillingham

Who'd Ha Thought It , Rochester
