One of the vehicles is thought to have lost a wheel which was hit by another car, causing a large oil spillage.

A police spokesman said: “Kent Police was called to a report of a two-car collision at 1.13am.

“Officers attended the scene on the London-bound carriageway of the M2 near Junction 7, Brenley Corner, to help recover the vehicles. No injuries were reported.

“Police are no longer at the scene and highways officers are working to clear an oil spillage on the road.”

A diversion was put in place to reduce queues while the closure was ongoing.

However, the road has now reopened and traffic has returned to normal.
