Man found lying in pool of blood

A MAN is fighting for his life today after being found in the street, lying in a pool of blood.

It is thought the injured man was attacked on the corner of Corporation Road and Hamilton Road in Gillingham shortly before he was found by a passer-by early this morning.

Police sealed off the area and the road was still closed more than 10 hours later as forensic teams made a thorough search of the scene.

Uniformed officers were making door-to-door enquiries as residents in the quiet street were starting their day.

One neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “I didn’t hear anything last night and when I woke this morning and looked out of the window, police had cordoned of some of the road.

“It was a bit of a shock - this is generally a quiet street where nothing ever happens. I hope the guy is OK.”

A large pool of blood could be seen on the corner of the road which had previously been covered by a big plastic grey sheet to preserve the evidence from the overnight rain. This is where the man, believed to be aged between 40 and 50, was found.

A spokesman for Medway Ambulance Station said: “We received a call at about 12.30am to Corporation Road, Gillingham. When we arrived the man was unconscious and it was obvious he had extensive head injuries. We used life-support techniques while we transported him to Medway Maritime Hospital.”

The man is currently being cared for in the intensive care unit where he is in a critical condition.

A spokesman for Medway Police said: “We are investigating an assault after a man was found with serious head injuries in the Corporation Road area of Gillingham early this morning.

“Officers were called at 12.40am and the man was taken to the Medway Maritime Hospital. Corporation Road will remain closed as our investigations continue.”

Anyone with information in connection with this incident is asked to contact police on 01634 884252.
