Martin Allen insists the spending is over after bringing Crystal Palace player David Wright to Gillingham

Martin Allen has completed his summer recruitment drive at Gillingham following Wednesday’s arrival of David Wright.

The versatile 32-year-old, who can play in defence and midfield, joined on a one-month loan from Crystal Palace.

But Allen (pictured) isn’t planning on bringing any more new faces in until January, at the earliest. The Gills boss said: "We have to improve and we have to get better.

"The goalposts have moved over the past month or so. Gazzaniga went to Southampton for a load of money and then the club picked up a lot of money for Matt Jarvis (following his move from Wolves to West Ham).

"Then Ryan Bertrand keeps playing for England and it’s like a cash machine coming in every time these players play and it’s fantastic for Mr Scally.

"It’s changed since I joined. He (Mr Scally) increased the budget and made offers to other players which never materialised.

"He isn’t going to go and spend crazy money but I reiterated the areas I wanted to strengthen and new players have been brought in on the back of that money.

"There will be no more players coming in and we will review it in January.

"Between now and then we will continue to go out and watch matches, find players and analyse the individuals in our current team and where we need to improve.

"Then come January, I will probably go knocking on Mr Scally’s door, singing a few carols and hopefully he might be generous and he might improve our XI again."
