The state of Kent County Cricket Club’s finances will be questioned by members at the annual meeting on Tuesday.

The club announced an operating loss of more than £595,000 in their annual report, including a drop in gate receipts of £243,000 and a loss in catering income of £69,000.

The distraction of the football World Cup and the structure of last season’s fixtures, creating what treasurer Simon Philip called "the lack of a cricket narrative", were among factors blamed.

However, one member, who did not want to be named, suggested the club’s management would face questions over the catering losses, the tax implications of selling £4.1 million worth of land for redevelopment at the St Lawrence Ground and the proposal to end a 60-year association with Larkings, as the auditors, and appoint Reeves in their place.

Chief executive Jamie Clifford (pictured) said several members had written to question the detail of the accounts and Mr Philip had spoken to them all.

Mr Clifford said: "Simon is a thorough man and everyone has had a thorough response, which is right."

Some of the queries had come from accountants, who had held differing views about how to handle the tax liability.

As for the change of auditors, he said: "The audit committee have recommended to the membership to appoint a new auditor and the membership will have a vote."

However, the Kent member complained that postal voters would not have the chance to hear the debate on the issue.

Up to 200 of the membership of more than 3,800 are expected to attend the meeting in the Harris Room at the St Lawrence Ground, from 7pm, after the team’s one-day match against Sussex the same day.
