Mince pies are on sale in supermarkets months ahead of Christmas

Supermarkets across Kent have started selling mince pies - and it's so early, they expire two months before Christmas!

It might only be September but the Coop and Asda are among those that have decided it is already time to offer the festive treats to their customers.

But the pies won’t even last until Christmas as they are due to go stale two months before the big day.

The Coop’s batch goes off on October 19, while the Asda pies expire on October 26.

And although it is still technically summer and will be until September 22, Sainsbury’s and Tesco have also got into the Christmas spirit early and are stocking the pies.

But not all supermarkets have followed suit, with Waitrose and Marks and Spencer holding back the seasonal snacks.

Mince pies are traditionally associated with Yuletide celebrations but according to the online publication The Grocer, sales for Sainsbury’s mince pies soared in June this year.

This was apparently due the unseasonably cold temperatures across England at the time.

So it may be that the countdown to Christmas has begun even before shops start to stock pumpkin pies for Halloween.

But whether the premature pies will fly off the shelves and be devoured before they go stale in October remains to be seen.
