HUNDREDS of balloons in the school colour purple were released as students celebrated the official opening of their £9million campus.

It was part of a day-long celebration at Ellington School for Girls in Ramsgate.

Prizes will be awarded for the student whose balloon travels the furthest, and for the person who finds it and returns it to the school.

Other activities included street dancing, mime groups, circus skills, karaoke, art attack demonstrations, weird and wacky science experiments, plus music from invited bands.

A time capsule containing photos and current day items was buried in the performance courtyard, to be opened in 100 years in 2107.

Assistant head teacher Loraine Bant said: "Ellington School for Girls is there to enrich the lives of young people and we enjoyed a day that they will remember."
