Kent Police has refused to comment on speculation Chief Constable Mike Fuller has applied for the top job at the Metropolitan Police.
Mr Fuller - who was given the county's top police post in January 2004 - has been rumoured as a possible replacement for Sir Ian Blair.
National newspaper reports today claim he is among between nine and 11 applicants to become the Met's chief.
He started his career as a policeman with the Met when he joined as a cadet in 1975.
Yesterday, the acting commissioner for the Met, Sir Paul Stephenson, announced he was applying for the role.
