With new players arriving and some of the injured boys getting fit it means competition for places is fierce.

Some people will have to miss out and unfortunately I was one of the boys not to get a shirt on Saturday against Walsall.

To say it hurt is an understatement but I’m not the only one. I have to deal with it and work even harder to show the gaffer that I want to be back involved and out on the pitch again.

The arrival of James Walker from Southend on transfer deadline day means competition for places is even more intense.

I’ve seen James play a few times and also played against him. He is a lively player and will certainly cause defences some problems. He gives the gaffer some interesting options up front and out wide.

Last Saturday was our third draw in a week and we can count ourselves unfortunate that we didn’t manage to get the three points.

We created some good chances but Walsall’s goalkeeper and defenders managed to come up with the right answers and stopped us getting the win. There were a couple of decent saves and a few great tackles.

At the other end, AJ didn’t have too much to do but when he was called upon in the first half he made a great point-blank double save to keep the scores level at half-time.

It helped us extend the unbeaten run to three games, which is a positive we can build on, starting against Brenford tomorrow (Saturday).

Simeon Jackson and Rene Howe caused a few problems for the Walsall backline and Andy Barcham looked like he was getting back to the form we know he can produce. They are all huge plusses for us and hopefully the goals will start to come again.

It was also nice to see Danny Jackman (pictured) get a runout towards the end to blow a few cobwebs away. He has been training for a week or so now and it’s good news to have him back competing for a place in the team.

As I said earlier, it’s Brentford this weekend in a big game for us. They are not many points above us and a win will bring us much closer to them as the league is so tight at the moment.

We went there last year and dominated most of the game and left disappointed to only take a point from the game.

We had a great following that day and hopefully it will be the same on Saturday to help us put on a similar performance.

We also met Brentford a month ago at home and it was another game which we felt we should have won, only to be undone by a fortunate deflection that gave them the three points.

We certainly owe them one this weekend!
