What a game it was on Saturday! It was a great performance and a decent result against a side with huge resources and squad which will be disappointed if they do not achieve automatic promotion this season.

It was a full house against our nearest rivals and great noise from our fans made it a fantastic atmosphere. The boys responded and put in a great display and took the game to Charlton for the full 90 minutes.

We created the best chances and forced their keeper in to some great saves, notably one from me, which when I hit it I was convinced it was flying in.

He got a strong hand to it, though, and forced it around the post.

In the end the only way they looked likely to score was from an error by one of us and so it was. I can only describe what happened as incredible. Making a snap clearance, the ball seemed to take a bigger bounce than I was expecting and it flew off my shin into the bottom corner giving Roycey no chance.

It was a devastating moment as all the good work we had done in controlling the game seemed to have been undone.

But the boys responded fantastically and we showed great character and belief to get back on level terms shortly after.

Jacko took a great first touch and finished fantastically to save me from a weekend of complete misery. Needless to say he got a big cuddle from me after the game. We can feel hard done by not to have taken all three points but we have to take huge confidence from a good performance. We’re going into the Southend game with a strong belief that we can get the away form going.

Mark Bentley nabbed the man of the match award and fully deserved. I’ve known him for over eight years and he hasn’t changed his playing style at all – all action!

With all of Southend’s problems with tax bills and the game being a fairly local one, I’m sure Friday will be another great atmosphere, coupled with the fact that a few of the boys live in Essex.

We will have to be careful with the spitting and germ issue as apparently the Health Protection Agency think it could be the reason swine flu has spread to Bolton and Blackburn. Personally I think, if you’re going to get it, you’re going to get it!

Just a final mention for my little boy Walter, who was one-year-old on Wednesday. He makes me smile every day even after scoring an own goal!
