The Kent coast is bracing itself for a two-day French invasion this weekend. French markets, a cycling tour and Le Balade classic cars will draw people to Sandwich as it tips its beret to the Gauls for Le Weekend.
Cheese, soaps, leathers and clothes from across the Channel can be sampled at a Normandy market on the Guildhall Forecourt, taking place on Saturday, June 9 and Sunday, June 10.
The aroma of tartiflette and crepes will also give Market Street some va va voom as Les Troubadours de Paris perform outdoor French theatre and dancing on both days.
Those who prefer the sight of chrome to frilly dresses will head to Le Balade de Sandwich, where vintage cars and motorcycles will go on show on the Quay Green, after a short road run to the Spitfire Museum. On Sunday, car owners will go on a grande tour of 45 miles of countryside around Sandwich before returning to the Quay for picnics.
Another fixture of Le Weekend is Le Tour de Sandwich, where cyclists ride around the Kent countryside. Anyone can take part in the ride on Saturday, June 9, which costs £12.50 to register on the day. The price includes route maps, a goody bag plus a drink and snack on return. A shorter family route can be taken on Sunday, June 10 and there are free medals to under 14s. Cyclists should be at the Quay Green at 9am on Saturday and noon on Sunday.
There is also a street boules competition on Delf Street over both days with prizes including a Champagne return ferry crossing from Dover to Calais with P&O.
A bouncy castle, slides and other entertainment will keep children happy on the Quay Green.
