KentOnline calls for MPs to speak up over Boris Johnson leadership row

MPs across the country are making their feelings clear, while most of Kent's have gone to ground again.

It's been an increasingly frustrating yet predictable trend during recent years.

It started with Brexit and continues with Boris Johnson – both divisive, both toxic.

There will be some who don't blame our politicians for not wanting to put their heads above the parapet.

But this thinking ignores the fact that our members of parliament were sent to Westminster to represent us.

Perhaps it's naive of us to cling to such niceties, but KentOnline will never stop asking them to comment.

From Brexit to Covid to Boris, we have rarely faced such problems as a nation.

You'd think MPs – the supposed cream of our society – would be desperate to let us know what they think.

However, here we are again with most of them more worried about their party positions than speaking out.

So far, only Sir Roger Gale and Laura Trott have stated their feelings.

It's plain to see that Boris Johnson is a man without shame; a chancer who saw his opportunity and took it.

But his elevation to the highest office is a symptom of a much wider problem in our society.

Millions of Britons have become increasingly and actively disengaged when it comes to politics.

For them expecting the best from our elected representatives has become a thing of the past.

Perhaps that's why people voted for Boris because he was a character and not that he had character.

With this in mind, maybe just maybe, Kent's MPs could show us where they stand and what they believe.

Their ongoing silence shames them all.
