Option over weighing babies a non-starter

AN IDEA that would have seen health visitors’ secretaries weighing babies will be not be pursued any further, according to Bexley Care Trust.

A meeting was held last week to discuss the idea, previously reported on Kent Online and branded as “terrifying” by the health union Amicus.

A spokeswoman for the Care Trust said: “I can confirm that the possibility of training a range of staff to assist with weighing babies was discussed at the regular fortnightly meeting of lead nurses on February 22.

“The outcome of the meeting was that this option is not being pursued further by the care trust at this time.”

But the union is still not fully satisfied that the idea will not be revisited at a later date.

Shaun Noble, spokesman for Amicus/ the Community Practitioners’ & Health Visitors’ Association, said: “It was and remains a non-starter in terms of what is best for the child.

“However, we are concerned that the trust’s statement contains the words 'at this stage’. We will be watching the situation very closely in the coming months to see that the trust is not tempted to do a U-turn on this issue.”
