PARTS of Chatham are set to become alcohol control zones following a joint effort by Kent Police in Medway and Medway Council.

From Friday, January 5, police and wardens will have the power to seize alcohol from people drinking in the high street and surrounding areas in the town.

It's anticipated the move will help the authorities tackle drink fuelled crime and anti-social behaviour and make the area more appealing to visitors.

The action follows the introduction of a similar zone in Rochester that has been in place for more than three years.

Ch Insp Des Keers said: "This is a positive move that follows extensive consultation with retailers who are in support of the partnership action.

"The alcohol control zone is about making Chatham an even safer place and further extending its appeal to visitors."

"Prior to this introduction we have received reports of people drinking in the streets and acting antisocially and now we will be able to stop them and confiscate their alcohol.

"We intend to utilise other tools already in existence in the area, such as CCTV and high profile police patrols, so that we can monitor people’s behaviour, intervene and prevent situations from escalating."
