Promotion from Blue Square Bet South remains our priority, says Welling United boss Jamie Day

Manager Jamie Day has insisted Welling’s record-breaking exploits are secondary to their main aim this season.

The Wings made it 11 Blue Square Bet South wins in a row on Saturday by defeating Dorchester 3-2, but Day remains focused on their primary objective of trying to achieve promotion.

“It’s something that is nice to achieve as a club and set of players but we’re just focusing on winning as many games as we can,” said Day.

“We’re pleased that we’ve broken the record but our aim has always been to try and get promoted.

“It’s something as a manager and players we are proud of and hopefully we can keep it going but every game in this division is tough.”

The run started at the beginning of November with a narrow victory at Havant and has seen the Wings score 31 goals and concede nine goals in bagging 33 points.

Day said: “Whether it’s in the Premier League or the lower levels, to win 11 games on the spin is a great achievement.

“The players have done fantastic to get us into this position and now we have to try and keep going.”

The win over Dorchester was particularly impressive given the injuries Day’s squad had to cope with. Already without Luis Cumbers since August, Loui Fazakerley (broken foot) is now likely to miss the rest of the campaign.

Jake Gallagher was only fit enough for a return to the bench and highly-rated centre-back Anthony Acheampong (groin) failed a fitness test the previous day. Keeper Sam Mott misses Tuesday night’s home game against Boreham Wood as he is on England C duty.

“We said at the start of the season that one factor that could be important was injuries due to the size of our squad,” added Day.

“We’ve had two or three key players out but we trust the squad that we put together in the summer and the younger players we can call upon.

“If we need to use the younger players then we will and if it doesn’t happen then we can look to get people in on loan.”
